A Dangerous Ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court On the same day that we applaud U.S. legislators for passing the first gun reform legislation in 30 years, we abhor the ruling made yesterday by our country’s Supreme Court favoring the NRA over people of the state of New York – and in reality, people across the country. The highest court in the land ruled against New York, finding there is a constitutional right to carry a concealed handgun outside the home for self-defense. Today is a dark day for our country. This ruling is an extreme and dangerous expansion of the Second Amendment that elevates the right to carry guns over every other right. OCAGV started its advocacy efforts so many years ago in opposition to concealed carry and we remain opposed today to what has evolved into an apparent cultural acceptance and normalization of an armed society. This ruling will change the way laws are passed in the future, and can also change the ones already in existence that regulate carrying concealed guns in public. More of our families will pay the price because more loved ones will lose their lives. Easy access to firearms is not the answer. This does not mean we will give up trying to save lives. As stated above, the U.S. Senate has moved forward with passage of a bill that will finally allow for much stronger regulations, and in Ohio, our committed legislators just introduced a bill to make us safer – S.B. 351, Enact Defend Our Children Act. The Supreme Court just made it harder for us, but we will never give up making this a better and safer country. Now is the time for each of us to make a stand against the culture of violence.
